The Conference aims to provide a platform for a diverse set of stakeholders in the region, including Governments, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations, academia, older persons as well as international and regional organizations to discuss the human rights situation of older persons in Africa, and to enable a better understanding of progress made and challenges faced in ensuring those rights, as well as exchange related experiences and lessons learned.
It also serves as an on-going debate in-between working sessions of the United Nations General Assembly Open-Ended Working Group for the purpose of strengthening the protection of the human rights of older persons, and is of great importance to stimulating discussions at the upcoming 11th session of the Working Group, which will be held from 6 to 9 April 2020 at the United Nations
